But nearly 21% of Iowa State students have a different story, and are instead working to establish a new family legacy as first-generation students. The world’s largest operating steam locomotive, known as “Big Boy,” passed through Ames, Iowa, on a coast-to-coast tour to celebrate America’s 250th anniversary earlier this summer. The locomotive was retired in December 1961 after traveling 1,031,205 miles; a multi-year restoration began in 2013 before it returned to service in 2019. <i>Image by Ryan Riley</i>
